The concept of a traditional school has been left behind in the previous century- with rote learning, only academically oriented schooling and good scores being the mark of a good students; all such beliefs are now obsolete. Present day schooling lays equal emphasis on sports, performing arts and other extracurricular activities along with academics. The need of this ‘balanced’ approach has been recognised by researchers from across the globe keeping in mind the overall well-being of students. An activity period, be it dance or sports, can provide numerous physiological, social, and psychological benefits to a learner and contribute substantially to his or her development.

“If you want to be creative, stay in part a child, with the creativity and invention that characterizes children before they are deformed by adult society.”

– Jean Piaget

In line with this belief, the National Education Policy 2020) has initiated a radical shift in the way ‘sports in education’ is observed. Traditionally believed to be an extracurricular pursuit, sports is now acknowledged as a fundamental pillar of holistic development, aiding in the learners’ physical, mental, emotional and cognitive growth. Consequently, the responsibility falls on the Schools to foster these activities and supporting the holistic well-being of their students.

What falls under the umbrella of extracurricular activities?

The scope of these activities is vast, and covers:

  • Sports- Indoor and Outdoor
  • Performing Arts- Dance (Classic and Contemporary), Music (Vocal and Instrumental), Choir, Theatre
  • Visual Arts- Painting/sketching/pottery/ craftwork/ sculpture making
  • Clubs- Science, Math, Debating, Writing, Speaking, Environmental etc
  • Community Services- Interact Club association and other CSR ventures
  • School Events- Annual Day productions
  • Student Council- Taking on leadership roles and responsibilities

When do Students take up these activities?

These activities are a part of the everyday timetable till class 10. Students have dedicated periods in which they take up the activity which interests them the most. In many cases integrated learning is also put into use while pursuing extracurricular activities. One such example is teaching the mathematical concepts of area and perimeter by integrating them with athletics and allowing children to measure the field that they are running around. In Senior Secondary School these activities are offered as Subjects that a student can take up to develop a deep understanding of the theoretical aspects of Music or Fine Arts or Physical Education; while honing their practical skills in all these.

These classes are conducted by teachers or trained instructors, and they may vary in terms of structure and functionality. Some encourage competition, whereas others are more focused on learning skills like team building and sportsmanship aiding in personal growth.

Why do the NEP 2020 and Educational Experts emphasise on extracurricular activities?

Extracurricular activities present the learners with unique opportunities for learning and growth. They provide with:

  • Increased confidence in self and self ability for each student as they are able to complete the activity or win a competition
  • Diverse experiences, which broaden the students’ horizon and make them informed and responsible citizens of tomorrow.
  • Creative freedom, encouraging the demonstration of personal interests and passions. These also help in developing multiple intelligences.
  • Development of social skills follows the interaction of the student with their peers and teachers during these extracurricular activities and sports. They understand and execute teamwork, leadership, and collaboration.
  • A Balanced and healthy life as they learn to manage academic pressure as well as follow their passion

To conclude, one cannot stress enough on the importance of extracurricular activities and sports in school life. At DPS, GBN, we ensure that each student gets the opportunity to explore and find their true calling for the creative and sporting side and with the right guidance, learn a skill for life.
