As educators and parents, it is our responsibility to guide them in using the internet thoughtfully, safely and ethically. Raising responsible digital citizens is not just about teaching rules; it is about instilling values that shape how students interact online.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how we can help shape responsible digital behaviour among our students:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong><strong>Teach the Basics of Digital Etiquette<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like we teach students to say \u201cplease\u201d and \u201cthank you\u201d in real life, we must also teach them how to be polite and respectful online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>a) Explain the importance of kind language in chats and comments.<br>b) Discuss how tone can be misinterpreted in text and the importance of thinking before typing.<br>c) Encourage empathy: if you would not say it face-to-face, do not type it online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>2. Help Them Understand Online Safety<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Children need to know how to protect themselves and their personal information.<br>\u2022 Teach students to never share passwords, addresses, phone numbers or school details online.<br>\u2022 Guide them on creating strong passwords and the importance of keeping them private.<br>\u2022 Talk about the risks of accepting friend requests or messages from strangers.<br>\u2022 Emphasise logging out of devices when done, especially on shared computers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>3. Encourage Responsible Content Sharing<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 What we post online often stays online. It is important that students learn to pause and think before posting.<br>\u2022 Teach the \u201cThink Before You Post\u201d rule \u2013 Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?<br>\u2022 Remind them that photos, videos or comments can be copied, saved or shared \u2013 even if deleted.<br>\u2022 Discourage the forwarding of inappropriate or hurtful content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>4. Develop Critical Thinking Towards Online Information<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Not everything on the internet is true and students must be taught to identify reliable sources.<br>\u2022 Teach how to verify information by cross-checking with trusted sites.<br>\u2022 Introduce the concept of fake news, misinformation and biased sources.<br>\u2022 Encourage asking questions like: \u201cWho wrote this?\u201d and \u201cWhat is their intention?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong>5. Highlight the Importance of Screen-Time Balance<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Being responsible online also includes knowing when to log off.<br>\u2022 Encourage outdoor play, reading and hobbies to balance screen time.<br>\u2022 Set healthy limits on how long students should spend on devices.<br>\u2022 Explain the effects of excessive screen time on sleep, eyesight and concentration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. <strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Promote Respect for Copyright and Digital Work<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Children must understand that just like books and movies, digital content belongs to someone.<br>\u2022 Explain what plagiarism is and why it is wrong.<br>\u2022 Teach how to give credit when using images, videos or text from the internet.<br>\u2022 Introduce simple citation techniques suited for their age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>7. Talk About Cyberbullying Openly<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 One of the biggest challenges children face online is bullying.<br>\u2022 Encourage students to speak up if they experience or witness cyberbullying.<br>\u2022 Share examples of what cyberbullying looks like \u2013 mean comments, exclusion or threats.<br>\u2022 Reinforce that reporting isn\u2019t \u201ctelling on someone\u201d; it is about protecting oneself and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>8.
